Your mom might be bit more tech-savvy than you thought. Just in time for Mother's Day, new data from Nielsen indicates that moms commonly own smartphones, are active bloggers, and frequently use social media.

When it comes to her phone, mom probably isn't stuck in the past with a clunky replica of something Zack Morris would have used. In contrast, moms are actually above-average smartphone users. Fifty-four percent of moms now own a smartphone, Nielsen said, compared to 50.4 percent of all mobile subscribers in the U.S.

Moms are also savvy when it comes to social media. A total of three out of four mothers, or 27.9 million moms, visited Facebook in March. And, at least half of all moms use social media on their mobile devices, compared to 37 percent of the online population. When using social media, moms are 38 percent more likely to become a fan or follow a blog online.

Speaking of blogging, mom also knows a thing or two. In fact, one out of every three bloggers is a mother. Moreover, moms are 27 percent more likely to visit Google's blogging platform Blogger, and 26 percent more likely to visit Wordpress.com than the general online population.

Oh, and Pinterest? Mom's a big fan. Nearly 5 million American moms visit Pinterest, and moms made up more than a third of the virtual pinboard site's unique visitors during March.
